Design Engineer (787 CPAR Manufacturing Engineering) at GKN Aerospace Tim has over 19 years of wide experience in a number of industry sectors including Defence, Automotive and Aerospace; in a number of roles including Production Support, Product development, Process development, Manufacturing Engineering, Continuous Improvement and Engineering project management. He is an effective facilitator and trainer with broad experience in running Kaizen events, Problem solving and 6 sigma improvement projects.

Exploiting data to drive process improvement and operational excellence

Traditionally various business systems are used to perform specific tasks, with data either being manually taken from or entered into one or more of these systems to create narrowly defined management reports.
Not only is this inefficient, it is also fails to provide information at the appropriate time to be able to react, It is “what happened?” rather than “what is happening?”. We also miss the opportunity to perform analysis on the larger available data set and focus purely on the defined business metrics, or have to conduct dedicated data mining work to answer a specific question.
At GKN Aerospace - Luton we are exploring how the deployment of an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solution with dedicated applications can be used to address manufacturing pain points, i.e processes generating defects, capacity and throughput bottlenecks, machine reliability issues and areas of high management effort, and create a standardised data structure that can then be used to provide actionable information where it is needed, when it is needed, in order to make data driven management decisions that can proactively drive our operational effectiveness and eliminate waste across the value stream.

Tim Greenaway will be presenting “Shopfloor Digital Transformation – Exploiting data to drive process improvement and operational excellence” at IoT: Exposing the Hidden Factory, 28th March at the MTC.
